How to Plant Tomatoes

Full Sun Project

Step 1

Find a sunny spot. Tomatoes need full sun (6-8 hours a day). If there's not an area in your garden that recieves full sun, you can grow tomatoes in large containers that can accommodate their vigorous root system

Step 2

Plant in nutrient-rich soil. In the garden, amend dense clay soil with Dr. Earth Homegrown Vegetable Garden Planting Mix to improve drainage, provide nutrients and balance soil pH for healthy tomatoes and vegetables. In containers, use Dr. Earth Pot of Gold Potting Soil.

Step 3

Plant deeply. Remove the bottom 1 or 2 rows of leaves, then bury the stem up to where those leaves used to be. The covered stem will grow new roots for a stronger plant. Tomatoes are the only plant that you should plant this deeply.

Step 4

Once your tomatoes are planted place a tomato cage over the plant. Tomato cages are used to prop up the weight of the tomatoes and allows the tomatoes plants to spread upwards. It is much easier to add the tomato cage when the plant is small.

Step 5

Water & feed regularly. Water extremely well when planting. Then, maintain a consistent watering schedule so that the soil stays slightly moist to the touch. Irregular watering can cause the fruit to split. Use Dr. Earth's Organic Tomato & Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer to fertilize every 6 weeks.
