San Diego Student Surprises Mother with Complete Garden Makeover
College-bound Aaron Baum wins Armstrong Garden Centers’ Facebook contest
San Diego, CA (June 6, 2012) — To cheer up his mother, who is diagnosed with a rare lung disease called Sarcoidosis, Aaron Baum, an El Cajon resident heading to college, entered himself in Armstrong Garden Centers’ “Complete Garden Makeover” contest on Facebook. Aaron showed an interest in gardening from his grandfather who brought over grape vines from his father to the US from Sicily in 1973. Aaron’s goal was to finish what his great-grandfather had begun, building the garden with his grandfather with the original vines.
As soon as Aaron’s entry was posted on Facebook, support for his cause was overwhelming. In just a week, over 600 “likes” were tallied in support of Aaron, each sending out prayers and words of inspiration. Other participants entered in the contest even voted for Aaron’s submission. “I have an incredible son.” Anna Marie Salvaggio, says. “And thank you to all of my dear friends and family for your well wishes and for helping Aaron.”
The contest began on February 29 and 75 submissions, including Aaron’s, were entered throughout the state of California. Through the power of social media and caring individuals, not just in his community, but around the world, Aaron was announced the winner on April 5. “Thanks everyone for all the support. I wouldn't be able to do this without you. We appreciate all the prayers.” Aaron states. “I’d like to personally thank Armstrong Garden Centers. This has brought my family and friends together so much that it will have an everlasting impact.”
Joe Sterkowitz, expert landscape designer from Armstrong Garden Centers, is very enthusiastic about the garden makeover. “In the design, I wanted to create an inviting atmosphere while ensuring that Aaron and Anna’s dream garden came to life,” he states. “Incorporating fruit trees with a walkthrough path, beautiful flower beds, raised vegetable boxes, and a 100% organic edible garden will really bring charm to their home.” Breaking ground has already commenced and the project will be completed in a few weeks.
